About This Blog

Welcome to my second attempt at chronicling my adventures as a young reporter with high-functioning autism.

As someone who frequently finds social interaction difficult and frightening, it’s a constant challenge for me to reconcile my fear of engaging with others with my desire to be a decent reporter. Especially in a changing industry that forces me constantly learn new reporting and communication techniques.

This blog is, first and foremost, my way of chronicling my attempt to find my place in journalism or failing that, another indstry that forces me to push my boundaries as a communicator.

It’s also an excuse to let others know a little bit more about me and have some fun in the process.

Like many others with Asperger’s Syndrome, I tend to obsess about subjects that fascinate and excite me. That obsession encompasses books, television shows and movies, especially those that have helped me cope with my autism and better understand the world.

In this blog, I will explore how my favorite examples of literature and pop culture helped me connect with others, as well as understand myself.

I would ultimately like this blog to become a community resource for journalists and those with Asperger’s or other forms of autism.

If you have something to say about journalism, your favorite articles, autism or anything else of interest, feel free to contact me about contributing or leave a comment.

My previous blog about being a journalist with autism is located at roughnights.blogspot.com.

About Me

I am a 25-year-old journalist freelancing for Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers, a  collection of community publications on the Treasure Coast of Florida.

I recently finished a 6-month internship at the Valley News, a small daily newspaper on the border of Vermont and New Hampshire. There, I covered general assignment news and features and reported for two months on the small towns of Hartford and Windsor, Vt.

I graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. While a student at UF, I worked for almost two years at The Independent Florida Alligator, billed as the nation’s largest student-run newspaper.

I started as a writer and was promoted to Enterprise editor after a year. I also interned at The Gainesville Sun, a daily owned by the New York Times Regional Group, in the summer of 2007.
